CHAPTER ONE

THE HISTORY

Since the winter of 1964, Warminster has been at the epicenter of one of Britain's most documented UFO phenomena. Thousands of witnesses—military personnel, farmers, scientists, and curious observers—have reported anomalous lights, craft formations, and unexplained aerial activity above Salisbury Plain.
25 December 1964
The First "Thing" is Heard
The mystery began in the early hours of Christmas morning when Warminster resident Mildred Head was woken by strange sounds battering her roof—described as scratching, rushing, and an eerie humming or whining noise. The night was calm and clear, yet many later reported similar unexplained sounds. Later that same morning, at around 6:00 AM, Marjorie Bye was walking to the Christmas service at Christ Church when she was struck by sonic vibrations so powerful they allegedly pinned her to the ground. She is often co-credited alongside Head with breaking the story wide open. This is widely regarded as the first recorded event of what became known as The Warminster Thing.
February–March 1965
Strange Noises and Animal Disturbances
Over the following weeks, reports escalated. Residents described roof-shaking vibrations, metallic grinding sounds, and "invisible forces" passing overhead. Some claimed birds fell dead from the sky, pets became distressed, and livestock behaved unusually. The events were no longer isolated—they were becoming a pattern.
Spring–Summer 1965
Arthur Shuttlewood Begins Documenting the Mystery
Local journalist Arthur Shuttlewood started collecting eyewitness reports in the Warminster Journal. His articles transformed the strange events from local gossip into a documented phenomenon. Hundreds of people began submitting accounts of strange sounds, lights, and unexplained aerial objects.

OUR MISSION

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to establish Warminster as the United Kingdom's recognised UFO town — a destination known for its unique history, skywatching culture, and connection to one of Britain's most famous unexplained phenomena: The Warminster Thing.

We aim to preserve and celebrate this extraordinary local heritage while creating new opportunities for tourism, community engagement, cultural projects, and economic growth. Through events, public installations, historical interpretation, media projects, and partnerships, we seek to transform Warminster into an internationally recognised centre for UFO history and paranormal tourism.

Our goal is not to create a novelty attraction, but to build a lasting cultural identity rooted in documented history, curiosity, storytelling, and public experience.

By embracing the town's place in British UFO folklore, we believe Warminster can become a distinctive destination that benefits residents, businesses, visitors, and future generations — the UK equivalent of Point Pleasant or Roswell, with its own uniquely British character.
